About Ryan O'Sullivan's art
Where Reality and Light Bend
The paintings that Ryan creates are often explorations into the art of illusion. The layers of paint build upon each other to bend reality into an image that appears differently for each individual, while remaining in the same frozen state to all viewers.
It is smeared plastic on woven cotton fiber, and yet a person will see a lion, a hummingbird, a love story. They will see themselves and they will see others, they will see lives they have lived and lives they wish to experience. They can see loved ones, memories, scenes completely alien to their imagination and yet somehow familiar.
Ryan enjoys playing at the edges of reality, where you aren't quite sure how real or unreal what you are seeing is. Allow your eyes to deceive you and get a small glimpse into the wild world of wonder that is Ryan's manifested imagination.
